Register with us as a Personal Tutor

We are keen to hear from tutors with relevant qualifications in all National Curiculum subjects from KS1 to GCSE and beyond.

PLEASE NOTE- YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A TEACHER TO BE A TUTOR.

We will also consider tutors of specialised subject (musical instruments, conversational French, creative writing and so on). While many parents would prefer a qualified teacher as a tutor, this is not always the case. Parents understand that time-constraints and workload prevent many teachers from taking on extra pupils privately. If you feel that you have the right level of knowledge/expertise to tutor successfully please contact us for more information or go to our Tutor Application form. For tutoring academic subjects, we would usually expect you to be qualified to at least graduate level, although experience and proven ability will be considered too. For information on what we would look for in a prospective tutor, please go to our'Good Tutors' page.

In most circumstances (ALWAYS for those wishing to tutor under-18 year olds) applicants must hold,or agree to apply for,an Enhanced  CRB Disclosure. We can advise on the application process, should you need it

We match our tutors carefully to parents' requests, to ensure that  tutors are working within the areas and delivering the subjects they are qualified to teach.

Although we cannot guarantee a particular level of earning, just tutoring 1 child per evening Monday- Friday could net around £300 per month.

Please note that all income from tutoring is taxable, even if you work full-time elsewhere. You may also be liable for Class 2 National Insurance contributions. You are responsible for your own tax affairs and should contact your local tax office or go online  at www.hmrc.gov.uk   for advice regarding this.

We don't give parents lists of  several tutors' names to choose from themselves-. This can be time-consuming and daunting. We find out what they want and put forward the profile of one carefully matched tutor at a time.

We check tutor availability before sending out details to the parent. This is to ensure parents aren't wasting time and that tutors do not receive unwanted contact and to prevent personal details being circulated unnecessarily.

Tutors are not obliged to take any introduction, but we do ask that we are informed if an introduction is not going to be acted upon and the reason why. We then contact the client to provide a further recommendation.

We do not stipulate that tutors must take up a minimum nunber of introductions. We also do not insist that tutors pay us commission if they take on additional clients as an indirect result of our introduction- for example another family member or a neighbour's child.

Tutors are not tied to our tutoring service exclusively and are free to join other agencies or advertise privately. However, we would expect tutors not to arrange to take on our introduced clients  privately (i.e not pay us the commission due). Should we have reason to believe that this is happening, we would immediately remove that tutor's details from our database. If a client suggests this,  we ask tutors to decline politely and remind the client that  future referrals from us depend upon a relationship of trust. If necessary, tutors can contact us and we would remind the client politely of the terms agreed with us on making the introduction.

Please note:

We don't employ any tutor directly and each tutor remains responsible for his/her own tax, National insurance, Public liability insurance etc. However, unlike many other agencies, we do support our tutors with advice in these areas and maintain regular contact. We can help tutors with the first visit to the client, decide on reasonable fees and can also help to resolve any issues that may arise.

Advertising is essential to tutors for securing pupils on a regular basis. This can be cost-prohibitive for individual tutors. Advantage Tutors (Gwent) will continuously and actively source leads through direct contact with all the schools/colleges in Gwent/ Newport/ St Mellons areas. We also advertise through online business directories and dedicated tutoring sites. Once every half- term we ain to distribute leaflets throughout selected Gwent locations, using our local knowledge to pinpoint areas where such campaigns will be most effective.

Tutors who register with us will be able to access support and advice by email and where appropriate, by phone.

Once registered, tutors will receive access to our tutor support service and an e-book that contains practical hints and tips for carrying out a business as a self-employed tutor. In addition, links to useful websites where tutors can access cost-effective, or even free, resources will be sent by email on a regular basis. Recommendations for value-for-money resources, such as educational games, may also be given. Where possible, discounts from educational resource suppliers may be sourced and the savings passed on to the tutor.

Tutors are free to set their own hourly rates, although we do offer advice about suggested fees. This is from around £14 per hour (depending on tutor qualification/experience) at key stage 1, to around £28 per hour at A level stage (Tutors may also need to charge travelling expenses and for resources- this should arranged with the client, but we can help tutors to decide on a reasonable amount).

In addition, there will be a small £3.00 commission to us for each session tutors carry out. This is pre-arranged by us with the client and collected by a tutor in addition to his/her own fee. Tutors then forward that amount to us on a monthly basis.

We are friendly and approachable- all our registered tutors are treated as people, not faceless numbers.

To request information, a registration  form for tutors, or if you have any queries, please email us with your name and address, quoting 'TUTORINFO' in the subject line. The necessary documents will be emailed to you, or sent via post. Please tell us in your email which way you would prefer.
